Blue Headed Vireo portrait by natureguy Blue Headed Vireo portrait by natureguy
I went out for a bit this afternoon, and saw this warbler. I don't know which one it is....anyone out there have an idea as to what it's name is. It was feeding with a bunch of Yellow- rumped myrtle warblers.
Thanks to the many responses, and to Ryan.... this has been ID as "blue headed Vireo" a first for my gallery!

I think it might actually be a vireo: a blue headed vireo to be exact. I've seen one once before, but it was during the spring migration, so the bird had more color to it.

I realized only after I had typed my comment that others had already identified it! Sorry about the extra spam. This was my first time seeing one and capturing a picture: [link]

Yours is better. :D

\This is a Blue-headed Vireo. Note its big thick bill, white "spectacles", crisp white throat contrasting with a blue/gray hood. Warblers have much thinner sharper bills, and more delicate features overall. Yellow-breasted Chats have a much more yellow color overall (especially the throat--this bird's throat is white), and don't have any wingbars.

That's weird. It might be in there under "Solitary Vireo," as the species was split three ways some time ago into three species: 1. Blue-headed Vireo, 2. Cassin's Vireo, and 3. Plumbeous Vireo. The only one of the three that occurs in Massachusetts is Blue-headed.

Best,

Ryan

Not positive but it looks very close to the Pine Warbler in my Audubon book.

Wow - that was my first instinct due to the spectacles, but his cap seemed so dull - I didn't even look at the wings . I have no experience with Chats at all (never saw one), but I thought I recognized BH Vireos pretty well. I'm getting better, but still have much to learn when it comes to details :)

Hi Melissa, I thought it might be that... but the "Eye" ring is different on this vs the chat.

I knew I should have went for my first instinct. The color didn't seem right to me for the Blue-headed Vireo - it looks so orange!
